Fry Bread
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 15-20 minutes
Total time: 45 minutes
Serves: 6-8
Fry bread is commonly made among the Blackfoot people of our area. One year, moms from the community held fry bread taco sales at our school. The proceeds went to pay for school supplies for their children. Usually by the time I got out of the office and to the kitchen to buy some, it was all gone. I was glad to get the recipe so now we can make it at home.
Ingredients:
2 cups vegetable oil
3 cups all purpose flour
6 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
Water
Directions
Heat oil, 1” to 2” deep, in a deep, flat-bottomed skillet on medium heat.
Mix dry ingredients together. Add enough water to form a soft dough.
Knead the dough for two minutes and then divide into 12 small pieces and knead again.
Pull or roll each piece into a flat cake.
Check oil by either putting in a kernel of popcorn or a small piece of dough. When the popcorn pops or the dough begins to sizzle and turn light brown the oil is ready. Do not let oil get too hot.
Fry each piece of dough in the oil until golden brown on each side. Remove from the oil and put on a plate with paper towel to absorb the excess oil.
Suggestions for serving
Our family’s favorite is to make fry bread tacos, by adding taco ingredients on top such as lettuce, tomatoes, ground beef with taco seasoning, kidney beans, grated cheese, sour cream and salsa.
Left over pieces of fry bread are great with honey and jam.
